Nonimmigrant Visas

When a foreign national wishes to enter the United States for a specific reason, but does not intend to stay permanently, then he or she may be eligible for a nonimmigrant visa. There are a large number of categories and each one has specific rules guiding eligibility. Each individual's situation should be carefully evaluated by a qualified immigration attorney to determine what that person is best qualified to receive. A few examples of the broad categories covered by the nonimmigrant visa include:

  • Students — Student visas are provided to persons entering the U.S. in order to pursue academic, nonacademic or vocational studies, including language training.
  • Workers — Workers visas are provided to persons entering the United States to take temporary employment ranging from farm work to a highly specialized professional position.
  • Victims of crimes — These visas are provided to individuals of any age who have been the victim of human trafficking or a serious crime, as well as individuals who have knowledge of serious crimes or criminal operations.
